چکیده

With ongoing genetic discoveries and improvements in technology, more genetic tests are available than ever before. Along with greater availability has come increased consumer demand for genetic tests and expansion of direct-to-consumer (DTC) testing. The American College of Medical Genetics believes that it is critical for the public to realize that genetic testing is only one part of a complex process which has the potential for both positive and negative impact on health and wellbeing. The College believes that the following should be considered minimum requirements for any genetic testing protocol:

Incidental findings and future testing methodologies: potential application of the ACMG 2013 recommendations

Reactions to the first clinical recommendations for the return of incidental findings (IFs) from genomic sequencing published by the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) were polarized and resolute. Exploring the three main points of controversy: mandatory testing, testing children for adult conditions, and selection of conditions to be reported on, illuminates concerns for ...

Points to Consider: Ethical, Legal, and Psychosocial Implications of Genetic Testing in Children and Adolescents.

In 1995, the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) and American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) jointly published a statement on genetic testing in children and adolescents. In the past 20 years, much has changed in the field of genetics, including the development of powerful new technologies, new data from genetic research on children and adolescents, and substantial clinic...

Technical and clinical assessment of fluorescence in situ hybridization: An ACMG/ASHG position statement. I. Technical considerations

The initial evaluation of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in prenatal diagnosis by the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG) indicated several unresolved analytical and clinical issues concerning this technology.1 During the intervening 5 years, the importance of many of the analytical questions has waned and issues relating to its clinical use have been clarified. Since that fi...

Point-counterpoint. Patient autonomy and incidental findings in clinical genomics.

1049 POLICYFORUM E xome and whole-genome sequenc-ing are rapidly moving into clinical application to aid diagnosis and treatment. However, a startling statement by the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) may prove to be a stumbling block (1). Rather than reconfi rming well-established principles of patient autonomy and informed consent that have long applied in medical gene...

Commentary: Save the children: direct-to-consumer testing of children is premature, even for research.

While I am in agreement with Tarini, Tercyak, and Wilfond (2011) about the need for more research on children and genetic testing, I strongly object to their main point, which is that this research should include studies of children’s involvement in direct-to-consumer genomic testing (DTC GT). I believe that this recommendation is premature. Having children undergo DTC GT now would expose them ...
